Winter Hair Issues

Winter isn't just Christmas lights, snow, and hot chocolate! Even though it is very nice to snuggle on the couch with a huge fluffy blanket sipping on some hot chocolate as marshmallows kiss your nose, and watching the snow fall, a sappy lifetime or a hallmark movie!

There are some not so pretty parts of winter as well... like flakey hair, dry itchy scalp, dry hair, and static in the hair. I don't know about you but I am nodding my head like yas girl... I have it all!!! Well if you have any of those issues then stay tuned as I give you some tips and tricks to help you with the issues winter causes on your hair.

Well let start with the dry scalp. Dry itchy scalps are no fun! The dryness comes from the dry winter air. I am going to leave some options to try at home along with some in salon options.

Make sure that the products that you are using are sulfate free. Sulfates are salts that help in preserving the products, but too much of it can cause dryness to the hair, and also make color fade as well. If your scalp is flaky or you have tried at home treatments then you may want to consult your doctor as they may need to prescribe you a product or a prescription shampoo. Also it might feel nice to take a scolding hot shower, but the hot water also helps dry the hair and scalp. When you shampoo and rinse your hair make sure to turn the hot water down some.

Here are some at home options that you may use:

  • At home you can use some vitamin e oil. This can come in capsules or in a small bottle. If you get the capsules then you might have to use a thumb tac or a safety pin to puncture a hole in the capsule to get the oil out. The vitamin E oil can be applied to the whole scalp or to the dry areas. I prefer to do this at night and sleep with it on my scalp and then shampoo my hair in the morning. This can be done daily or weekly it depends on you.

  • Another at home option is when you do conditioning treatments or hair masks you can massage the treatment into the scalp as well.

  • Also hot oil treatments help in putting moisture back into the scalp. Make sure to limit the tea tree oil as it can dry the skin out if used too much.

  • When you book your next appointment you can also add a scalp treatment. This treatment is massaged into the scalp for a few minutes and then sits to penetrate the scalp. The scalp treatment helps to remove product build up on the scalp, it helps remove dry skin thats sitting on the scalp, and it helps to stimulate the scalp which will help the natural oils to produce and blood flow to the root of the hair to help the hair to grow.

As I said earlier winter air is dry... meaning our hair will be dry too. Or in my case drier! This time of year it is super important to moisturize our hair. If you have colored hair, naturally wavy, or curly hair or used a lot of hot tools on your hair then your hair dry already. I'm going to give you some good ways to do some at home options as well as in the salon.

Here is an at home option that you may want to try:

  • You can try some hair masks, or deep conditioning treatments. You can find these at your local beauty supply store. If you are a DIY-er then you can try using coconut oil with honey, coconut oil with avocado, You can add an egg to either of those options, but eggs have a lot of protein and too much protein can cause the hair to be more brittle and break the hair. I would only add the egg if you have damage to your hair and need the protein, but use it sparingly. Another thing I like to use with my masks its a bonnet that connects to your blow-dryer to heat up the mask or treatments. The heat helps in opening the hair up to allow the treatment to get sucked in. I will attach a link to what I am talking about.

Here is an in-salon option that you may be interested in:

  • Booking for a deep conditioning treatment. The treatment is applied to the hair and massaged into the scalp. They come in many different varieties, and some can be customized to your hair needs. Along with conditioning treatments you can also purchase leave in conditioners to be used at home It's a 10 is one of my favorites! They have different ones to chose from, the original, one with keratin to help rebuild damaged hair, light - which is a lighter formula for finer hair, and blondes to help keep their hair blonde. I recommend getting a conditioning treatment with color services, and at least every 4-6 weeks as long as you are doing at home treatments.

Lastly I was asked about this problem on Saturday. STATIC!! UGH we have all been there. Got the cute leggings on, the boots up to the knees, a cute dress, vest, scarf, and your hair is all over the place. Well here is some options for you. The solution to this is easy. Dryer Sheets! You use it to get the static off your clothes, and it works for the hair too! You can actually save the ones that come out of the dryer they will still work. Just give it a quick rub all over the hair and it will lay down. Another option is you can actually push the dryer sheet onto your brushes bristles and brush your hair and it will help with the static that way. If you are going out you might want to throw a dryer sheet in your purse or just tuck it inside of the top of your boot. Then you can pull it out and use it whenever you need it for your hair, your kids hair, and your clothes.
